An affiliation case, brought at the instance of Augusta Harris, against Robert Riddick of Nai Nai, was adjourned for a fortnight, on the application of Mr. Skerett, who appeared for the complainant.

Evening Post 30 July 1887
An affiliation case was heard by the resident Magistrate yesterday afternoon, in which Robert Riddick was summoned as the puttative father of the illegitimate male child of Augusta Harris. Mr. Skerrett appeared for the complainant and Mr. C. H. Izard for the defendant. Both parties, reside in the Hutt district. Augusta Harris, aged 17 deposed that she kept company with the defendant for twelve months, and became betrothed to him in November 1885. Intimacy did not commence till some months afterwards, and it continued until October last. The child was born on the 30th of last month. She told defendant about her condition last October, and he replied that he could not marry two. He had since married another. Defendant did not deny the paternity of the child. Samuel Harris, father of the complainant, said the defendant had promised to bear the expense of confinement, and also to provide for the maintenance of the child. In the defence it was alleged that Riddick''s intimacy with the complainant ceased in July last year, and that when he admitted the paternity of the child he was led to believe that it would be born in March. Finding that such was not the case, he now repudiates any respondsibility, and in his evidence he names three men in whose company he has seen the complainant since his own relations with her were broken off. The case was finally adjourned until Friday next for farther evidence.

Evening Post 5 October 1887

Mr. Skerrett appeared for the mother of the infant, and Mr. C. H. Izard for the defendant, The defendant, a young man, deposed that he was only getting £60 a year, without board and residence. He had been married to a widow with three children for the past six months previous, paying £1 a month rent. His mother was willing to take the child, and he was also prepared to look after it. Mr. Skerrett said that Harris, the mother of the baby, was not willing that it should leave her possession. His Worship ordered the case to stand back, so that the parties might come to some arrangement.
