A cottage was destroyed by fire at the Lower Hutt early this morning. The house in question was one of the oldest in the village, and formerly belonged to Mr. Robert Relf, but it was recently sold to Mr. Joseph Gigger. Two men, one of them named Pat Maloy, rented the cottage, and retired to bed as usual last night. About one o''clock an alarm of fire was raised, and the flames spread so rapidly that it was impossible to save anything, and one of the men had his head, neck, and hands badly scorched. The whole of their clothing, &c., was burned, and it is fortunate that their personal injuries were not of a more serious nature. When it was found to be impossible to save the cottage, the efforts of the willing neighbors, who were headed by Mr. G. Scrimshaw and Constable Stewart, were directed to confining the fire to the place where it originated, the adjoining house, occupied by Mrs. Pie, being at one time in great danger. The crowd worked well, and to their exertions Mrs. Pie owes the safety of her property. We do not know whether Maloy''s cottage was insured.
