SAD TERMINATION TO A WEDDING PARTY.
[By Telegraph.]
(Our Own Correspondent.)
Carterton, This Day.
The wedding of Mr. Falloon to Miss Alice Rayner, daughter of a well-known Taratahi sheep farmer, was celebrated yesterday. In the afternoon some of the bridesmaids and friends went for a drive to Carterton. One buggy contained Mr. Thomas Rayner and Miss Rayner, brother and sister of the bride, Miss Gaskin, Miss Mary Daysh, and a little three-year-old Miss Compton. On passing the Carterton Post Office, the horse suddenly shied and swerved from its course, frightened at a white-covered vehicle containing hawkers''s goods. One of the wheels appeared to strike the kerbing, and the horse, bounding forward, gave the buggy a swing, which sent it over, and all the occupants were pitched out pell-mell. The driver, Mr. Tom Rayner, stuck pluckily to the reins, and ran the horse into the fence once within 300 yards of the scene of the accident. Meanwhile two or three bystanders who had witnessed the capsize ran to render assistance to the girls. One of them, Miss Daysh appeared to be hurt seriously, and she was carried into Mrs. Lundquist''s house close by. Dr. Johnston was sent for, and arrived within ten minutes. An examination of the injuries proved that Miss Daysh had received a compound fracture of the left leg below the knee. The doctor put a temporary dressing on the injured limb, and the invalid was convoyed to her home in a wagonette. Mr. Tom Rayner had the instep of his right foot rather seriously sprained, and he was considerably bruised. Beyond a good shaking, the others escaped injury.
