Evening Post 26 March 1900
Mr. G. Croft, of Auckland, has just built a new organ, which is the gift of Mr. Albert Mudgway to St. Augustine''s Church, Petone. The specifications provided for swell organ, CC to G; Bourdon, 16ft; open diapason (bass and treble, clarabella, bearded gamba, each Bft; gemshorn, 4ft; piccolo, 2ft; each stop having a full complement of pipes. The organ front has a very chaste appearance, the woodwork being of mottled and stained kauri, and the pipes artistically decorated. The supporting rail carries the words in Old English characters, "Praise ye the Lord," and under this and over the manual is an inscribed brass plate, setting forth that the organ was presented by Mr. Albert Mudgway, as a loving tribute to the memory of his dead parents, also his two brothers Frederick and Stephen." The builder''s improved tubular pneumatic action is applied to the stop action of the front pipes, lowest 24 of the bourdon and 12 of the clarabella pipes, the touch is light, and the tone of the instrument dignified and powerful. Mr. Croft is entitled to credit for the general excellence of his workmanship. It is intended to add a second manual and pedals to complete the instrument when the new church is erected. The cost of the organ, as at present completed, was £175. At yesterday''s services it was announced that on Friday evening a harvest thanksgiving service will be held, at the close of which the instrument will be formally opened with a recital of organ music.
