The Government has now completed the purchase from the Mudgway Land Company and taken over 447 sections of the Mudgway Block, which consists of rich level land adapted for close settlement, having been cropped and used as a dairy farm for a long number of years. The amount paid is about £30,000. It is stated that adjoining subdivisions have sold as high as 50 per cent, above the price paid for this block. The negotiations for purchase have been rather protracted, but in accepting the price agreed on (sic) the directors of the company are said to have been influenced by it being a cash transaction instead of on the long terms usual in land sales. The acquisition of this property, in addition to the 120 sections previously acquired on the south side of Jackson-street, should mean a substantial increase in the population of Petone. The Mudgway Block extends from White''s Line (the boundary of the Hntt and Petone) to Heretaunga-street. The negotiations for the sale were en- trusted by the Mudgway Land Company to Messrs. Dwan Bros, and Mr. Henry Savage, who originally secured the land and formed the company.

FATHER AND SON
DEATH WITHIN HOURS OF EACH OTHER
Two of the oldest residents of the Hutt Valley, Mr. Benjamin Mudgway, aged 93, and Mr. Walter William Mudgway, aged 70, father and son, died within hours of each other this week. Mr. B. Mudgway died on Tuesday and his son on Wednesday. Mr. B. Mudgway purchased the block of land which is now intersected by Jackson Street and bounded on the east by what is now the dead arm of the Hutt River. This land, known to all old residents as Mudgway''s farm, was farmed by Mr. Mudgway and his family for many years. Since he disposed of it, Mr. Mudgway has resided in Lower Hutt. His son had been farming elsewhere since the disposal of the Petone property. He resided recently in Waiwhetu Road, Lower Hutt.
