Sudden Deaths in Wellington.
...
Another instance of awfully sudden death occurred this morning at half-past 9 o''clock, in Willis-street, the deceased being a farmer named George Mabey, who resided with his father at the Taita. Mabey arrived in town early this morning when, to all outward appearances, he was in robust health with a dray-load of farm produce, a portion of which he delivered at various places of business in the city. According to his usual custom the deceased, at the hour above mentioned, drove up to the store of Mr. C. R. Young, grocer, Willis-street, where he delivered a bag of chaff. He was on his way back to the cart when he was observed to stagger and fall to the ground alongside the tramway. Vigorous efforts were made to restore him to consciousness, and at first it was thought the poor fellow was merely suffering from a fit. Constables Madden and Bree hastened for medical assistance, and Dr. Gillon arrived on the spot within five minutes of the occurrence, but the man was beyond all medical skill, having expired just before the doctor arrived. Mabey, after falling to the ground, gave only a few spasmodic gasps. Dr. Gillon expresses the opinion that the cause of death was apoplexy, but considers that a coronial enquiry should be held, and consequently in all probability Dr. Johnston will issue his precept for the holding of an inquest. The father of the deceased was on the spot shortly after his son''s demise, and stated that deceased was a hale and hearty man, and had never been subject to fits or illness of any description. It is somewhat singular that Mabey died within a few yards of the Empire Hotel, in which Mr. Kennedy expired so suddenly last night. Deceased was a single man, and was 34 years of age.

INQUEST.
The sudden death of George Mabey, who fell down in Willis-street on Saturday morning last and died within a few moments, formed the subject of a coronial enquiry at the Morgue this morning, before Dr. Johnston, the District Coroner, when the following evidence was taken:-
Michael Wallace, labourer, deposed that on Saturday last, shortly after 9 a.m he was in Willis-street, and when opposite the grocery store of Mr. Young he saw deceased lying on the roadway at the back of his cart. Witness went to the man''s assistance and raised his head, and remained with him till he died, which occurred within about five minutes from the time he dropped down. The deceased died before Dr. Gillon arrived. Deceased did not speak after falling down, but he breathed stertorously just before he expired. He appeared to have fallen during a fit.
George R. Young, grocer, Willis-street, stated that he had known deceased for ten years past, and on Saturday last he was delivering chaff and had brought in a 50lb bag of chaff. He returned to his cart, and witness shortly after this saw deceased lying in the street as described by the last witness. When deceased first went to witness'' shop he spoke and appeared to be in good health. He was a very quiet and hard working man, and was a Wellington native.
Dr. Gillon, who had made the post mortem examination, gave evidence to the effect that on Saturday morning last he was called to see the deceased, whom witness found lying in the middle of Willis-street, near the Empire Hotel, life being extinct. Witness endeavoured to restore animation by artificial respiration and other means, but failed in the attempt. The post mortem examination disclosed the fact that the internal organs were very much congested, but structurally they were quite healthy. The brain was healthy in structure, but it was slightly congested. In witness''s opinion the cause of death was failure of the action of the heart, caused by a sudden spasm. The death was attributable to natural causes.
Job Mabey, settler at the Taita, father of the deceased, deposed that his son left home on Saturday morning shortly after 6 o''clock with a load of produce, at which time he appeared to be in his usual health, and he made no complaint of feeing unwell. Witness overtook deceased in another cart at Ngahaurangu, and spoke to him, when he seemed to be quite well. This was the last witness saw of deceased alive. Witness sometimes complained of pain in his heart and stomach, but he never was laid up.
The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.

During the course of his summing up at the inquest held on the body of the late George Mabey to-day, the District Coroner drew attention to the singular coincidence which existed between Mabey''s death and that of the late Mr. Kennedy. Both of the deceased were born in Wellington ad died within twelve hours of each other, and within a very few yards, and both of them were cut off by syncope, which, considering that neither of their hearts was organically diseased, might be regarded as decidedly singular.
