They had eight children, four born in England and four in New Zealand. It is remarkable that of the four children who died, two were a son and daughter born in England, and the other two were a New Zealand son and a daughter. The surviving children are Mr. John Kilmister and Mrs. Gardner (sic), who were born in England, and Mr. James Kilmister and Mrs. George Judd, who was born in New Zealand. There are some 50 grandchildren and others to the fourth generation scattered throughout the colony.

Lady Nugent sailed from Gravesend 10th October 1840 and arrived in Port Nicholson 18th March 1841.

On Dec. 30th, and Inquest was held by Dr. Buck, at Mr. Benges house, Taitai, on the body of Alice Gardiner, a child under 2 years of age. It appeared that on the afternoon of Dec. 29, it was playing with other children about the place; it strayed away from the rest; it was not missed for a short time, and when search was made it was found in a stream, quite dead, into which it had fallen. Another of the dwindling band of pioneers who have spent four score and more years in New Zealand and seen the development of the settlement at Port Nicholson since its infancy, passed away this past week in the person of Mrs. L. Gardiner. Born in the county of Gloucestershire in 1834, the late Mrs. Gardiner arrived in Wellington in March, 1841, by the ship Lady Nugent, with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Kilmister. As a girl, with her parents, she endured the hardships and privations of many of our early settlers of this period. Moving with her parents later to a selection on the Porirua-road, she remembered the time the family grew their own wheat and ground it into flour, in a coffee mill until such time as with their neighbours they clubbed together and bought a small hand mill for their general use. In the later forties, her father being engaged on the construction of roads in that district, she entered the service of Mrs. Russell, wife of Captain Russell, of the 58th Regiment, when stationed at Pahautanui. In 1852 she married the late Mr. H. H. Gardiner, then of H.M. Surrey ship Acheron. Mr. Gardiner having to proceed to Sydney before obtaining his discharge, Mrs. Gardiner went there also. After three years'' residence in Sydney, Mr. Gardiner, who had travelled and seen a good deal of the world, returned to Wellington, accompanied by his wife. The late Mrs. Gardiner had a distinct recollection of the earthquake in ''55, and used to relate how on the occasion, of the biggest quake — they were then residing at Kaiwarra — the chimney was shaken down, and shortly after some of the Native women living nearby came into the whare through the opening made by the falling chimney. Mrs. Gardiner, with the exception of the time in Sydney and a short stay in Christchurch, lived the whole of her life in Wellington, at one time residing in Cuba-street, in the days when that street was more residential than business, near the present site of C. Smith''s. Mr. Gardiner predeceased his wife some thirty years. She is survived (of a family of six) by four children, viz., Mrs. R. H. Hankins, Mrs. F. A. Staples, Mrs. G. E. Godber, and Mr. F. W. Gardiner, also by twenty-five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, five of whom are in Australia. A brother, Mr. John Kilmister, who also arrived on the Lady Nugent, aged five years, also survives her.
