A claim of £75 12s 6d, as compensation for the bite of a dog, was made in the Magistrate''s Court this morning. The plaintiff, a farmer at the Taita named John Hudson, deposed that on the 23rd of February last he went to deliver some feed at the shop of Henry Gills, grocer, of Taranaki-street, the defendant in the action. While taking some clover through the yard, and while both hands were above his head holding the load on his back, a dog belonging to Gills rushed at him and bit him on the leg. He showed the wound to Gills, but was told that he would get no satisfaction from him. He then went to Dr. Teare, who attended to the wound, and afterwards paid eight visits to the Taita to dress the leg, besides having various consultations in Wellington. The doctor''s charge amounted to £45 12s 6d. The plaintiff also claimed £30 for loss owing to his being unable to attend to his business for 12 weeks. Dr. Teare said, in reference to his account, that the wound was a bad one, and had shown signs of incipient blood poisoning, thus necessitating a long medical attendance on Hudson. He did not ask any other doctor to attend to the matter, as Hudson was his own patient. He did not send Hudson to the Hospital, as his patient wished to go to his home. For the defence evidence was given that Hudson had "sooled" the dog, and was the worse for liquor at the time; also, that the dog did not belong to Gills, but to a young man named Harris, an employe of his. Mr. Skerrett, who appeared for the defendant, contended that the amount of damages had been grossly over-estimated, and called attention to the time that had elapsed since the date of the occurrence. Mr. Martin, S.M., held that the dog belonged to the defendant, but that Hudson had teased it. With regard to the bill, His Worship could not help thinking
that the case would not have been be treated if it had been an ordinary accident, when the man would probably have been sent to the Hospital as soon as the wound showed signs of becoming worse. His Worship gave judgment for the plaintiff, allowing £1 8s 6d for medical attendance and £5 10s further damages, with costs amounting to £2 19s. Mr. Wilford, who appeared for the plaintiff, stated during the case that he only claimed damages for Hudson, leaving it to Dr. Teare to substantiate his own charges.

FOUND DROWNED.
John Hudson, labourer, a well-known resident of the Lower Hutt district, was found drowned in the Hutt River at 4.30 o''clock last evening, a sugar bag filled with stones being tied round his head. Deceased was addicted to drink, and had been living apart from his wife for about three months. He was locked up at the Lower Hutt for drunkenness on the 14th inst., and next morning was convicted and discharged. The same day he called at his wife''s place about 4 o''clock, and remained there until 8.40 p.m., at which hour he said he was returning to his lodgings. Before leaving he obtained from his wife a sugar bag, which he said he wished to put some things in. He was then sober, but his wife could see that he had been drinking, and he seemed despondent. Frequently he threatened to "do" for his wife and for himself afterwards, but on this particular night he was quiet and orderly. Nothing more was seen of him until a carter named Murray Johnstons saw the body in the river. He reported the matter to Constable Paton, who at once identified the body as that of Hudson. Deceased leaves a family of five or six children
