The death of Mr. Walter Harris, of Lansdowne, removes one of the earliest settlers in the Wairarapa district. Deceased was born in Essex, England, in 1837, and four years later reached New Zealand with his parents in the emigrant ship Lord William Bentinck. The family almost immediately settled at the Hutt. In the early coaching days, long before railway communication between Wellington and the Wairarapa was thought of he drove between the city and the Hutt. Subsequently he prosecuted the work of a carrier over the Rimutaka, and his trips up the rugged and tortuous track, in all kinds of weather, were full of adventure. About forty years ago he settled on the Upper Opaki Plain with his bride (a daughter of the late Mr. Robert Wyeth), and there he and Mrs. Harris reared a family of six sons and five daughters. For the past two years he had been in indiffernt health.
