A KITCHEN TEA.
On Friday morning, Miss Kimbell gave a kitchen tea for Miss Hansell (now Mrs. Davies) at which the bride to be was the recipient of many useful gifts for the kitchen. Miss Kimbell''s frock was of cinnamon crepe de chine, while Miss Hansell wore a fawn and orange jumper suit with brown hat, Mrs Kimbell''s frock was of black marocain, with fawn front; and Miss G. Hansell''s frock was of blue and black, with a blue hat. After morning tea, the guest of the morning removed the wrappers from each parcel and made appreciative and witty acknowledgment of each gift, demanding the name of the donor when that name was not inscribed. The following guests were present:— Misses Humphries, O. Pomare, H. Butter, V. Denniston, J. Jervis, Hardcastle, N. Welsh, J. Rddiford (sic) and Dudley (2).

WEDDING.
DAVIES—HANSELL.
Masses of lovely blue, pink and green themums, dahlias and autumn leaves, hydrangeas, and many hued chrysan (sic) made a charming background for the wedding of Alice Emily, elder daughter of the Ven. Archdeacon A. L. and Mrs Hansell, to Walter Ernest Petheridge, son of Mrs. E. D. Davies and the late E. D. Davies, of Colombo, Ceylon, which was solemnised at St. James''s Church on Tuesday.
The wedding was one of such wide interest that long before the time of the ceremony, the church, inside and out; was packed with the friends and well-wishers of the bride and groom. A beautiful bell of hydrangeas and Chrysanthemums — the work of Miss Ellis — was Suspended above the bridal pair at the altar. The choir occupied the front seats of the church, and Miss Harte was at the organ. The ceremony was performed by the bride''s grandfather, Archbishop Julius, of Christchurch, and the bride entered the church, on the arm of her father, wearing a beautiful frock of ivory satin, with yoke of georgette and Honiton lace, tight fitting bodice, and long, flared skirt of uneven length, and a lovely old bridal veil of Honiton lace which was first worn by her great-great-grandmother. Her bouquet was of white dahlias and maiden-hair fern. Miss G. Hansell the bridesmaid, wore a charming frock of vivid blue spotted net with a blue silk slip, worn with a wide felt hat of palest blue. White silk stockings and blue satin shoes completed her toilette. Her charming bouquet was of pink, blue and green hydrangeas with blue streamers. The bridegroom''s present to the bride was a set of ivory-backed initialed toilet brushes and tray, to the bridesmaid a rhinestone necket while the bride''s, gift to the bridegroom was a gold wristlet watch. Mr. T. T. N. Coleridge, of Wellington, carried out the duties of best man. After the ceremony a reception was held at the Vicarage where Archdeacon and Mrs Hansell received their guests on the verandah, Mrs Hansell wearing a frock of navy blue silk, and wool crepe de chene, with fawn front and uneven hem, and a velour hat to tone. Her bouquet was in shades of pink and mauve. The bride and bridegroom, received the felicitations of their friesds (sic) in the drawingroom, after which the guests viewed the beautiful and useful gifts with which the dining room was lined — eloquent, indeed, of the esteem in which the Rev. Mr and Mrs Davies are held in the community. Tea was served in a large marquee on the lawn, and there the various toasts were honoured. The beautiful floral bell had been brought from the church, and put in front of the bride and groom in the marquee. The first toast, "The bride and bridegroom" was proposed in very humourous vein by the bride''s grandfather Archbishop Julius, The bridegroom made appreciative rejoinder, after which Mr. Coleridge proposed the bridesmaid''s health interspersing the reading of amusing and congratulatory telegrams between the speeches. Bishop Sprott, in a witty speech, then proposed the health of the bride and bridegroom''s parents, but His Lordship also said in the course of his speech, in what high esteem he held Archdeacon and Mrs Hansell. Archdeacon Hansell, in responding, made heartfelt acknowledgment of the beautiful gifts, good wishes, and kindness which had been showered upon his daughter and her husband, and felt that he could not do more than hope his daughter might fulfil her mission as a wife and help-mate as well as her, mother had done. After the cutting and dispensing of the wedding cake the guests lingered to see the departure of the bride and groom, and to shower them with confetti. Mrs Davies''s travelling frock was of pinky fawn silk and wool crepe de chene, with pleated skirt, finished with georgette collar and cuffs, with which she wore a vieux-rose tailored coat and velour hat to tone. Amongst the varied and beautiful, gifts were many representative of the various organisations in the church, a beautiful silver tea service, from the Vestry and parishioners, a case of servers from the Sunday School, a beautiful picture from the Boys'' Bible Class, and an oak bowl form the Belmont Young Men''s Club. A clock was an artistic present from the staff and pupils of Chilton Saint James, whilst a most unique and beautiful gift was a painting of Wellington Harbour by Mrs Stowe, an artist of over ninety years!
Amongst the guest''s were Miss Julius (aunt of the bride), who wore a charming frock of navy blue marocain with steel studded panels and hat to tone. Mrs Sprott wore grey lace over black silk, with black Bangkok hat. Mrs Allan Johnston was in a fawn marocain frock with Oriental front and hat of royal blue velour. Lieut. Elworthy. A.D.C., cousin of the bride, and Mr. Davies, a brother of the bridegroom, were also present.

ST. JAMES''S CHURCH.
PARISH MEETING.
The annual meeting of the parishioners of St. James''s Church was held last Thursday evening. The vicar Ven. Archdeacon Hansell presided over a large attendance. Considerable interest was taken in the work of the Church, there being 13 nominations for the positions of ten vestrymen and three for the two Synodsmen required.
In his report of the year''s work the vicar stated that it was the parish''s privilege to have its quota raised to £115 this year and this obligation had been met. There had been fresh interest taken in the life of outlying districts and he paid a warm tribute to the curate, Rev W. E. Davies, for the splendid work he had done in the daughter churches of Taita, Epuni, Waiwhetu and Belmont. The vicar said that the parish was blessed beyond words in its Sunday Schools and Bible Calsses (sic), which were very well attended. He thanked the superintendents for the good work they were doing. Archdeacon Hansell made feeling reference to the sad bereavement which had befallen Mr. C. L. Collins, the superintendent of the Waiwhetu Sunday School. He deeply regretted that as Mr Collins would be leaving the Hutt, the church in this district would be losing his services. On behalf of the church he thanked him for what he had done and said that the parish owed a debt of gratitude to him. The church''s practical work was well illustrated in its work for the orphans and needy. A house to house collection was taken up each year for Social Service when from £70 to £80 was collected for the church''s homes in the diocese. The vestry had recently decided that a retiring collection should be taken up after eah (sic) Sunday service, when contributions of pence might be subscribed during the winter months, to relieve necessitous cases in the parish, coming under the notice of the clergy. In conclusion, the vicar thanked all the church workers who had responded so wonderfully during the year. He considered that the outstanding feature of the parish is the amazing number of workers who are anxious and willing to serve the church at all times.
In speaking to the report, which was adopted, Mr. R. G. House spoke of the steady growth of communicants as a very good indication of the spiritual life of the parish. The services throughout the year had been very well attended. Although the freewill offerings had fallen considerably during the year, the general offertories had only fallen £21 He paid a great tribute to the work done by the ladies to organise entertainments during the winter months and to Mrs. H. E. Leighton who had so successfully organised the garden party. On behalf of the vestry Mr House thanked Mr. F. J. Jones who had undertaken the duties of treasurer during the absence of Mr S. M. Hobbs in England.
During the general discussion which followed on the Freewill Offertory system, it was decided that an effort be made to obtain more subscribers and that the vestry report on the matter.
The election of officers was as follows:— Vicar''s Warden, Mr. A. G. W. Jarman; People''s Warden, Mr. R. G. House; Vestry: Messrs W. H. Barker, A. W. Foote, G. L. Giesen, H. A. Lines, C. Nicol, W. H. Smith, S. M Hobbs, F. D. Strombom, -. McClurg and H. B. Robb; Auditor, Mr G. D. Woodward; Synodsmen: Messrs H. V. Ward and F. D. Strombom.
Songs were rendered by Messrs Ward and Farquhar, and supper was served by the ladies.

ST. JAMES'', LOWER HUTT
The annual meeting of the parishioners of St. James'', Lower Hutt, was held recently, the. Rev. H. E. K. Fry presiding. The annual report dealt with the work of the parish, the departure of Archdeacon A. L. Hansell, and Mrs. Hansell, and of the Rev. W. E. Davies and Mrs. Davies, and the arrival of the Rev. H. E. K. Fry and Mrs. Fry, and of the Rev. H. V. C. Reynolds. Most satisfactory and encouraging reports of the choir, C.E.M.S., the Mothers'' Union, St. James'' Girls'' Club, and Sunday''school were also included. The Waiwetu and Belmont churches reported progress as to both finance and attendance, and St. James'' Tennis Club had well maintained its position among the clubs of the valley. The, following were elected members of the vestry:— Messrs. W. H. Barker, A. W. Foote, G. L. Gieson, S. M. Hobbs, H. A. Lines, H. B. Robb. W. H. Smith, A. S. Kempthome, Cowie, and Arnold. Mr. W. J. Jarman was elected vicar''s churchwarden, Mr. R. E. House parishioners'' churchwarden, and Mr. Arnold representative to synod.

DEATH OF REV. WALTER DAVIES
A FORMER vicar of Island Bay, of Ngaio, and recently chaplain of Arohata Borstal, the Rev. Walter Ernest Detheridge Davies, died yesterday, aged 62.
Mr. Davies was well known to many Wellington people through his work as secretary of the Wellington branch of the Wellington National Council of Churches, which he represented on the City Council public relations advisory committee. During the Festival of Wellington he was convener of the festival''s Church committee and he played a prominent part on committees associated with the Billy Graham crusade in New Zealand.
Born in Colombo, Ceylon, Mr. Davies was ordained in 1928 and was curate of Lower Hutt from 1928 to 1933. He was then appointed vicar of Fairlie, in the Mackenzie Country, where he special gifts of tolerance and engendering enthusiasm resulted in the building of the Lake Tekapo Church of the Good Shepherd.
Many who helped to build the church were high-country shepherds from the slopes of the Southern Alps. The church has remained as a tourist attraction and a centre of worship.
The next two years were spent on the West Coast as vicar of Hokitika, where All Saints Church was quickly built.
When Mr. Davies became vicar of Island Bay in 1964, it was not long before St. Chad''s? Church was built in Houghton Valley and the Bata Shoe factory in Owhiro Bay was offered for church services.
Between his term on the West Coast and Island Bay he had also been vicar of Oamaru, and St. Matthew''s, Christchurch; gone to Fiji; been chaplain to the Bishop of Polynesia; and worked willingly for a multitude of good causes.
Regular Visits
While he was vicar of Island Bay he insisted on regular visits to the Sisters of the Catholic Home of Compassion, and the Salvation Army home for children - with an extra visit to the old people of the Presbyterian hostel.
He later became vicar of Ngaio. After a long period ill-health he was appointed chaplain of Arohata. His example of courage in his last illness set an example to all who knew him.
His survived by his wife, a son (Matthew), and daughter (Mrs J. Turton, Levin, and Mrs. C. Hardy). The funeral service will be held at 11 am tomorrow at St. John''s Anglican Church, Paraparaumu Beach, and afterwards at the Crematorium, Karori.
