On Saturday, about noon, a man named William Fuge, employed on the work of repairs to the Waihenga Bridge, accidentally fell from the scaffolding, which is being used for the repairs, into the river beneath, the fall to the surface of the water being about 20 feet. Fuge could not swim, and in the fall he caught hold of a plank, which went down along with him, and was the means of saving his life. He stuck to the plank until the current carried him into shallow water, where he was taken out by the men employed along with him. He was then conveyed to the old toll-gate house, a few chains off, where he was supplied with dry clothes, &c, and he returned to his work none the worse for his ducking.

OBITUARY
MR. WILLIAM FUGE
The death has occurred at Featherston, in his 81st year, of an old Wairarapa resident, Mr. William Fuge, who lived for some years in Auckland after his retirement in 1914 and was a member of the Carlton and Ponsonby Bowling Clubs. Mr. Fuge was born at Paignton, Devonshire, and went to sea as a boy. He arrived in New Zealand at the age of 18 and after working for some years at Featherston took up land and started dairy farming. He was one of the original suppliers of the Featherston Co-operative Dairy Company, of which he was chairman from 1901 to 1914. Mr. Fuge is survived by his wife, five sons and two daughters. There are 21 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
