Railway Missions
Large numbers of men, long distances from home and living in stringent conditions, were based in work camps in the Central North Island building the Main Trunk railway line. To minister to them the diocese appointed in 1906 Mr W J (sic) Weller who, operated from a collection of tents and huts, ''a model of neatness'', provided facilities for reading, writing and recreation, as well as pastoral care and Sunday worship. 11

Mr Weller was fortunate to escape asphxiation when the fabric of the tent in which he was sleeping caught fire. He had to cut his way out ''in his sleeping suit''. The mission base was completely destroyed.
Assistance to Mr Weller was given by the Reverend P W Clarkson, vicar of Taihape, within whose parish a number of these camps were suitated. Orginally part of Hunterville parish, Taihape became independent in 1905.

FIRES.
Fire at Ohakune,
(From our own Correspondent.)
(By Telegraph.)
OHAKUNE, July 29.
At 2.30 this morning, Mr. W. T. Weller, railway missioner, had his dwelling house and tent burned to the ground, and nearly lost his own life. He lost everything belonging to him, besides a good amount of money. He did not save even his boots, socks, or coat, only three blankets which he put round himself when he slit the tent open to get out. He was severely burned about the head, feet, and hands.
Another resident was having three tents erected by Dette and Allridge, at Mr Weller''s to live in, and was going to shift today. Part of the furniture was supposed to be shifted yesterday, but, owing to the carrier being too busy, this was not done.
Great sympathy is felt in Ohakune for Mr Weller. Several helpers were at the fire, and managed to save some of the late Mrs Weller''s belongings.
The origin of the fire is a mystery.
Mr Weller is progressing favourably.
