Evening Post 22 August 1877
The accident which was yesterday reported to have occurred to George Dew, a well-known carter to the Wairarapa district, as it happily turned out, was not attended with near serious consequences as was at first supposed. It appears that about twelve o''clock on Monday night whilst he was driving on the Hutt road near Taita, at the first gorge, one of the horses took a sudden turn down the road leading to the river bed, being accustomed to feed there. The other horses evidently anxious to get home the waggon being then only about half a mile from Stokes''s Valley where Mr. Dew resided suddenly made a rush up the bank and the wheels coming in contact with the side, the waggon was immediately capsized, Dew being pitched violently out into the bed of the river. The water, however, was very shallow and beyond getting wet and sustaining a slight injury to his left hip on which he fell, he experienced no material injury, and on getting up he immediately released all the horses save one which was found beneath the shafts. Being unable to relieve the poor animal without assistance, he then proceeded home for help, but it appears that a waggoner afterwards Game along the road at an early hour on Tuesday morning and cut the shafts thus setting the animal free. Mr. Dew''s absence from the waggon probably led to the belief that he had met with some serious accident, but as already stated he happily escaped such a misfortune.
