Death has removed another old resident, Mr. Peter Coupar McEwen, one of the founders of the old firm of McEwen and Churchill, bakers and pastrycooks, of Lambton-quay. The deceased was born in Dundee, Scotland, in 1838, and came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship Phoebe, which arrived in Wellington in February, 1843. The family went to live at the Waiwetu, but at the time of the Maori rising they were driven back to Wellington, and Mr. McEwen learned the bakery trade with the late Mr. Peter Laing, and on the latter''s death he and Mr. Churchill bought the business, which they carried on for many years. Finally, Mr. Churchill acquired Mr. McEwen''s interests, and the latter retired into private life at Petone. Mr. McEwen leaves a widow, two daughters (Mrs. Powell, of Petone, and Mrs. W. Brown (sic), of Lower Hutt), and one son (Mr. G. D. McEwen, of the firm of McEwen and Carter, Petone).
