Founders Society
By Adele Pentony-Graham
THE Wairarapa branch of the Founders Society held its first outing of the year on Waitangi Day at the magnificent Daysh House in West Taratahi.
This is one of our local Heritage Houses and has a lake in front of the property, with wild-fowl under the trees, and a punt moored on the bank.
The gardens are superb, lovely to stroll through, and we were allowed to view the interior of the house.
The house has been restored gracefully and has many original features, even down to a cabinet under the stairway - possible made from local native timber.
Alfred Daysh, son of John Ings Daysh, owned the house. Born in Taita in 1854, Alfred married Elizabeth Sage in 1876 and they had a large family.
The couple are both buried in Clareville.
The Wairarapa branch of the Founders Society is holding their annual meeting at Masterton Croquet Club rooms in Queen Elizabeth Park on March 18 at 1.30pm.
All welcome.

Mr E. T. Phelps, of Parkvale, second son of Mr Sydney Phelps, of Somerset, England, was married in St. Mark''s Church. Carterton, on Wednesday afternoon, to Miss E. J. M. Daysh, eldest daughter of Mr A. Daysh, of West Taratahi. The bride, who was given away by her father, was dressed in a gown of creme catourba cloth, trimmed with creme net insertion and satin ribbon, with hat to match, and carried a white ivory prayer-book with satin streamers. There were four bridesmaids — Miss Myrtle Daysh, sister of the bride, and Miss Connie Reid, who were attired in white figured muslin, trimmed with Valenciennes lace and insertion, with hats to match and bouquets; and two little dots Queenie Daysh (sister of the bride) and Jessie Card (cousin), who wore creme delaine with white silk hats, and carried baskets of flowers. Mr W. L. Hawkin was best man. The bridegroom''s present to the bride was a gold bangle, to the two elder bridesmaids gold neck chains and hearts set with pearls, and to the little girls gold initial brooches. The Rev. R. Young performed the ceremony, and the wedding breakfast was partaken of at the residence of the bride''s parents. In the evening a social was held in the Clareville Hall.
