As some enquiries have been made in reference to the delay in commencing the building of the Johnsonville Church, it may be of interest to explain that when the tenders sent in for carrying out the plan prepared by Mr. Clere were opened, it was found that one was for £1000 and the other for £780. As the committee had only about £300, both these tenders were clearly not to be thought of, and Mr. Clere has consequently been asked to modify his plans so as to bring the building more within the means available. When this is done, fresh tenders will be invited.

NEW CHURCH AT EASTBOURNE
OPENED ON SATURDAY.
On Saturday afternoon the new Anglican Church at Eastbourne was opened by Rev. Joshua Jones. Despite the exceedingly unpropitious weather there was a large attendance at the ceremony. At 3.30 a procession entered the building. The choir followed, then the clergy, and finally the vicar (Rev. J. Jones).
The service was the ordinary evening liturgy, with the addition of some prayers suitable to the occasion. Three special psalms were given. The service was taken by the Rev. W. Fancourt (St. Hilda''s, Island Bay), Rev. G. P. Davys (St. Peter''s, Wellington), Rev. J. D. Russell (St. Augustine''s, Petone), and the Rev. J. Sykes (Upper Hutt). The vicar, in an address, traced the development of the church in Eastbourne and in the Hutt district generally. A year ago hardly more than a dozen worshippers met in the schoolroom for worship. To-day the congregation numbered between forty and fifty. Mr. Shortt officiated at the organ. After the ceremony the visitors were entertained at tea at Mr. Fraser Shortt''s house.
The church is of Gothic design, and constructed of camerated concrete walls, rough cast, with an asbestos slated roof. Inside, the structural timbers are of oiled jarrah, while the furniture is of specially selected red pine. Mr. F. de J. Clere is the architect, and Mr. W. H. Nimmo the general contractor.

OBITUARY
Mr. F de J. Clere
The death occurred last night at his residence in Bolton Street of Mr Frederick de Jersey Clere, at the age of 96.
Born at Walsden, Lancashire, on January 7, 1856, the son of the Rev. Henry Clere, Mr. Clere was educated at St. John''s Clapton, (since removed to Leatherhead), a school for the sons of the Church of England clergy. On leaving school he was articled to Mr. Edmund Scott, an ecclesiastical architect of repute, and afterwards became chief assistant to Mr. R. J. Withers, of London.
Coming to New Zealand in 1877, Mr. Clere practised his profession in Feilding, which has just been opened up for settlement and in Wanganui, where he was architect to the Wanganui Education Board from 1883 - 1888. Returning to Wellington, he continued in practice in this city (except for a short break, while he was in England in 1900 - 1901) until he retired in 1946, after reaching his ninetieth year.
Mr. Clere was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1886 and for more than 50 years held office as one of the four honorary secretaries of the institute throughout the Empire. At the time of his election he was probably the youngest Fellow, and before his retirement he became the oldest practising member of the institute in the world. He also took an active part in the formation of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, on the council of which he served for a number of years.
Being trained in ecclesiastical architecture a good deal of his work was in connection with churches, of which he designed more than 100 during his long life. In 1883 he was appointed Wellington Diocesan Architect and among the larger and more important Anglican churches, and those constructed more recently in permanent materials and designed by him, were All Saints'', Kilbirnie and All Saints'', Palmerston North, St. Matthew''s, Hastings, St. Mary''s, Karori, and those at Eastbourne, Johnsonville, Khandallah and Lyall Bay. He was also architect for the Presbyterian Churches of St. Andrew''s, on The Terrace, and the one at New Plymouth, both built in ferro-concrete.
LASTING MEMORIAL.
The first occasion on which this material was used for a church of Gothic design, as far as is known, was in 1917 when Mr. Clere designed the Roman Catholic Church of St. Mary of the Angels, Boulcott Street. Although an entirely new departure, it was carried out with conspicuous success and will remain a lasting memorial to his skill and originality.
Other work carried out for the Catholic Church including St. Peter and Paul''s Church, Palmerston

Mr. Clere''s work was not however confined to churches and church buildings. He also designed a number of domestic and commercial buildings. Amongst the latter were the first A.M.P. building, pulled down 50 years later to make room for the present building, which he also designed, the former Government Life Insurance Building, the two harbour board buildings, at the entrance to Queen''s Wharf, some of early wards at the Wellington Hospital, including an operating theatre, the boy''s high school and the A.M.P. Building at Palmerston North, the Commercial Ban of Australia premises at Wellington and Masterton, and abattoirs for Dymock''s bacon factory (now Hutton''s) at Kaiwarra (sic).
Mr. Clere was a member of the Wellington City Council for a short period until 1895, and early in the century served on the Lower Hutt Borough Council for several terms. He was a life member of Lodge Waiwhetu, Lower Hutt, of which he was a foundation member. He was a member of the Wellington Diocesan Synod, for many years and was also a member of the General Synod.
Being keenly interested in art, and himself a talented water-colourist, he was active in forming the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and served on its first council. At the time of his death he was one of its few life members.
Mr. Clere will be missed by many who knew him as an English gentleman in every sense of the word, a man of firm Christian principles and kindliness, and one who to the letter practised the ethics of his profession.
He is survived by his two son, Mr. E. H. de J. Clere and Mr. F. T. Clere, and four daughters Miss K. E. Clere, formerly music mistress at Marsden School, Miss M. V. Clere of Waiheke Island, Auckland, Mrs. Gordon Rich, of New Plymouth, and Mrs Byran Gold, of Okato, Taranaki. He leaves also 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
