DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER.- Mr George Avery died on Wednesday at his home at Taita, aged eighty two years. Deceased came from England to New Zealand in the ship Bolton in 1841. For some time he was employed by Sir Francis Molesworth on the property which is now the Bellevue Gardens. Subsequently he took up land at Taita, and resided there ever since. Deceased took part in the operations against the natives in the Hutt district in the early days. He leaves fourteen children.

Evening Post 3 November 1903
An interesting biography of the late Mr. George Avery, who died at Taita on the 8th (sic) ult., at the age of 82, appears in the Pahiatua Herald. Deceased, who left sons and daughters to the number of sixteen (sic) scattered through the colony, was a native of Staplehurst, Kent, and arrived with his parents in the ship Bolton in 1840. He was then a youth of 19, and assisted his father to build a hut for the family, who remained on board until shelter was provided. In the Maori troubles of the forties, Mr. Avery, who came of a fighting stock, joined the Hutt Militia under Captain Rhodes, and rendered distinguished service, for which in later years he was awarded the New Zealand war medal. His reminiscences of the early days of settlement were very interesting. Very few of the old band of Hutt Militia now remain. The survivors are enumerated as follows by the paper for which we quote:- G. Whiteman, Upper Hutt; - Milne, Taita; G. Farmer, Manawatu; - Swanson.

FOR DISPOSAL
DESIRABLE PROPERTY AT TAITA.
DESIRABLE PROPERTY AT TAITA.
THE ESTATE OF THE LATE GEORGE AVERY.
TENDERS are invited for the Purchase of this beautiful Property, situated in the very heart of the lovely and fertile Hutt Valley.
The Property, which consists of 30 Acres (more or less), is just outside the Lower Hutt Borough boundary. It thus enjoys all the benefits of the present and future improvements carried on within the borough, without having to pay other than County Council rates.
The Estate is one that easily lends itself to cutting up into Building Sites, as it is all perfectly level, clear, high, and dry, with a long frontage to the Main Hutt Road. The electric cars will run right to Park-avenue, which is almost DIRECTLY OPPOSITE the property. The Hutt Golf Links are next door, and therefore add greatly to the desirability of the property as a speculation for immediate or future cutting up into Building Sites. The present buildings consist of two dwellings and the usual farm buildings.
While the owners do not bind themselves to accept the highest or any tender, they will probably accept the highest, as they are desirous of winding up the estate.
Tenders Close 21st December, 1909.
All particulars and forms of tender may be obtained from the undersigned, to whom tenders will be addressed.
J. G. BRECHIN, Pahiatua.

Evening Post 19 November 1919
THE CREAM OF THE TAITA.
THE AVERY ESTATE.
TO BE SOLD BY TENDER.
TENDERS are invited for the Purchase of 31 acres, 24 perches of THE CREAM OF THE TAITA LAND, comprising Section, Part 49, Block IX. Belmont Survey District. The land is freehold, and is offered by the Executors of the late George Avery. At present it is being carefully and profitably farmed and, if required, dairy cows, plant, etc may be taken over at valuation The assurance that the ELECTRIC TRAMS will, within a very short period, be running from Wellington to the Taita is a guarantee that there will be a rapid and continued advance in values in such a very fine Residential Suburb as the Taita is.
THE AVERY ESTATE, while not subject to the Hutt Borough rates, enjoys all the privileges of its conveniences by reason of the fact that the Estate adjoins the Borough Boundary, IS RIGHT ON THE MAIN HUTT-ROAD and has an asphalt footpath to its gate. On the property are two Houses and all necessary farm buildings. The whole of is eminently suitable for MARKET GARDENS, for DAIRYING or for RESIDENTIAL PURPOSES, and the owners are prepared to accent a VERY REASONABLE PRICE.
Further information may be obtained from the undersigned, who is one of the Executors, and to whom tenders should be addressed.
TENDERS CLOSE 25th NOVEMBER inst. The highest or any tender may not necessarily be accepted.
WILLIAM BROWN,
Wallaceville, Upper Hutt.
